Publicity release for Vistas-Vision and Verse: an exhibit of ekphrastic poetry and the original art that inspired it

“A common theory about poetry and art (made popular by Plutarch) is that “painting is mute poetry and poetry is a speaking picture”.” John Hollander

Vistas-Visions and Verse: an exhibit of ekphrastic poetry and the original art that inspired it is a compilation of 35 paired art and poetry pieces by 14 York and Lancaster County Poets. Media include photography, painting, textile, collage, acrylic on canvas, mixed media and more. Poetry takes the form of haiku, narrative, free verse and more.

The exhibit will hang in the Spring House Gallery of the Lancaster County Council of the Arts, 201 West Gay St., Lancaster, in November and December. An opening reception for the exhibit will be Sunday, November 4th, 2-4 and will include a brief reading by the poets.

“No one person will see and internalize a work of art in exactly the same way, thus outer experience is a reflection of the inner personal experience.” Kristen S. Kurzawski, Demystifying Poetry Using Women’s Ekphrasis.

We hope this exhibit will continue and contribute to the conversation between literature and the visual arts.
